We all like to get positive or constructive feedback and when it is delivered in the right way it can really benefit both the individual and the business. Even so, with evidence to support this idea, it is the fact that people do not receive feedback that is considered to be the major contributor to their decision to leave their workplace, so it really is important to provide feedback to your employees. It is a wise decision as it allows you to find out where employees may require support or skills development to enable them to raise their performance levels.

So, why is 360 degree feedback used? It has been generated from the requirement to provide an increase in frequency and quality of feedback to employees. This is in addition to the annual appraisal where the employee visit's the manager's office to be given a summary of their strengths and weaknesses.

Historically, it has been the manager's role to provide feedback and, due to increasing workloads, the manager's feedback has been scant at best. What 360 degree feedback does is widen the circle of feedback providers to include peer evaluation, direct reports and self evaluation. The end result of this process is that the individual has access to a comprehensive report that allows them to compare their own perceptions of their work to those of their close associates. Once they have this report, a performance coach will assist them in making any necessary adjustments through a targeted improvement plan.

There are a number of benefits with 360 degree feedback: when individuals have a greater insight into their strengths and weaknesses they are better able to manage their careers as a result of making improvements to interpersonal skills and building upon leadership skills and the employer is able to take advantage of having a highly skilled, experienced team of employees whose productivity and quality of work is high.

What are the key elements of a successful 360 degree feedback process?

There are six of these elements.

1. The senior management has to take ownership of the process and be supportive of its realisation. As well, employees have to obtain the necessary skills to be able to provide feedback that is useful. The most important factor is that the managers should be prepared to utilise the skills they have acquired in the provision of coaching if and when it is required.

2. All surveys that are given must have a relationship with the mission statement of the company and the skills for which the company is searching and should consider the skills that are needed to obtain both individual and company success.

3. Everyone concerned with the process must attend a 360 orientation. At this orientation they will be informed that 360 is merely a developmental tool and should never be used in performance appraisal. Confidentiality is also stressed to make sure that all involved are comfortable with the process.

4. A questionnaire or survey is completed. The majority of these surveys are completed online with special encryption software that allows for secure data collection.

5. Once the surveys are completed, they are collated in the form of a report and given to the individual. The format of the report should be easily accessible. A group summary report is usually presented to the senior management in which numeric ratings are tallied which reveal strengths and weaknesses within the group. This then provides information that is useful in deciding upon any relevant training activities.

6. If any coaching has to be completed it is given to those who require it. A good coach stays impartial and is concerned with helpful and realistic goal setting. It is possible for managers to become involved in coaching as it has the ability to reinforce skills that have been attained and guarantees that they remain accountable.

So, how can this benefit your organisation? It all depends on how much you are willing to put into the process. I never explain to them about the measure of self-discipline it takes, and how great are the temptations to take a "break" and reorganize my sock drawer when I find myself faced with working on a project that is less than interesting (or worse yet, "not as profitable" as other projects). Why burst their bubble? Let them daydream awhile?.

Working at home can be all the wonderful things that those people daydream about. Setting my own hours, working at my own pace (project deadlines permitting), running to the market at 1 o"clock on a Wednesday afternoon when there"s nobody there---these are just a few of the plusses of working at home. For parents (whether it is the mom or dad, or both working at home), being able to adjust their working schedule to school schedules, being able to take the kids to the orthodontist or to soccer practice, working at home is a definite plus. For people who don"t work at home and who want to work at home, it is probably hard to think of even one minus. But the fact of the matter is, the minuses do exist---in abundance.

It is not my purpose here to ruin all your hopes or plans to establish yourself as a work-at-homer. In fact, I do encourage you to follow that dream and be your own boss. However, I want you to take just a few minutes to take stock of your situation and once and for all decide if working at home really is in your best interest.

First, and obviously, you have to have a job skill that is amenable to the at-home environment. If you trim poodles on the weekend and think you can turn it into a full-time at-home business, then look around. Do you live in a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor and just do your neighbor"s poodle once a month (but you do it really well)? Or do you live a four-bedroom ranch house with a three-car garage that can be made over into "Donna"s Clip Joint" and happen to live in an urban neighborhood where everyone has pets? And even if you do, what about all the permits that you will need? Will you be able to pursue this type of work at home, and do so legally?

The most applicable work-at-home job skills involve the use of a computer, the Internet, phone, fax, and other small business/office machines. You can hardly drive from home to the grocery store without seeing those signs nailed to telephone poles: "Got a Computer? Earn up to $2000 at home!" Of course, you can, but can you?

For the sake of argument, let"s presume then that you have a computer and an assortment of small business machines, and that you do indeed have some skill that you believe can be marketed. Let"s focus on you for a minute: Are you self-disciplined? Are you organized? Do you have the proper workspace where you can work undisturbed? Are you able to face a workday where you have no supervision or guidance? Can you work at home, day after day, without having the people contact that you would typically find "on the job"? When you have overlapping projects, will you be able to cope with the necessary prioritizing so that you get the time-critical job done on time without jeopardizing the next job in line?

Efficient Central Heating Needs the Right Thermostat for the Job

With the winter season quickly approaching, central heating for your home becomes a priority. In order to keep your home warm, all components of your central heating system must be in proper working order. However, there are some typical faults with the system that tend to happen at the worst possible time. One such common problem is frost damage, which can damage and sometimes destroy boilers and pipes.

Traditionally, central heating systems were designed with the frost thermostat installed in close proximity to the boiler. The thermostat would start and stop the boiler until the desired air temperature was met. When the thermostat registered that extra heat was being released from the boiler, the central heating system would be shut down to conserve energy and prevent overheating of the home.

A new development in insulation materials for central heating systems has made the frost thermostat's job much more challenging. Modern boilers and pipes are much more insulated than their older counterparts. Energy conservation was the goal of this alteration; unfortunately the problem of overheating persists. The frost thermostat is no longer able to detect changes in temperature accurately. As such, overheating and energy waste continue to occur.

The pipe thermostat is one solution. The product is installed on the boiler return pipe. This thermostat detects changes in pipe temperature and prevents overheating by shutting off the system when necessary. There are several UK companies that sell the frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat together in one kit. These products allow you to adjust room temperature and provide frost protection for your boilers and pipes.

Installation and set up of these new thermostats is simple and quite intuitive. Guidelines for complete wiring and installation arrive in the kit, ensuring simple installation. The frost thermostat is usually set to 5C and the pipe thermostat is commonly set to 25C. Additional pipe thermostats can be bought for other exposed pipes, to further insure that your system is completely protected.

Sometimes, a pipe thermostat is not the best solution for your individual needs. Another product that could prove useful is the fully programmable room thermostat. This can be installed in a number of locations throughout the home, including the living room or hallway. They serve to record and monitor the room temperature and are very easy to install. Modern room thermostat models operate by RF, or Radio Frequency. A radio signal is sent from the thermostat to the boiler eliminating the need for wiring.

Thermostats are an important element of your home heating system but, there are other variables that impact your heating efficiency. By sectioning the home off into zones, waste can be avoided. The use of zones, allows you to focus the heat where you need it most. More populated areas can be kept warmer than empty rooms that do not require as much heating. This minor change can produce great results. Not only will heating bills be lower but, system efficiency will be greatly improved.

In the early days of the web there were not many options to help you build a great website. You could either hire an expensive web designer to make the entire site for you or you could create the website yourself. Paying a webmaster can get expensive, in the old days creating a site yourself required you know HTML. Most people don't have time to learn to do this.

Many webmasters use a template to start your site and you can to. This is the golden age of the web and entrepreneurs have a lot more choices when it comes to creating a simple, professional website.

To find templates Google, "website templates" and several million pages selling templates will show up. Google, "free website templates" and several million pages with free templates will show up.

Most of the pages that come up in your search will show the designs on their site for you to preview before you download them. Select a template that you like that goes with what you sell, download it and then add your information. The HTML and design is done for you, all you have to do is tailor it to fit your needs.

The template will not be made with your photos and text; you have to add this yourself. Once you have the basic site on your hard drive, editing is simple. Editing involves adding your own logos, text and graphics to the template to make it yours.

Templates can be edited with a free HTML editor that is easy to download and install on your computer. When you buy a website template make sure it is compatible with your HTML editor. Search Google for, 'free HTML editor" and several will come up. They are very easy to download and install on your computer.

A website template is just the thing for starting an online business because it is not expensive and they can be simple to modify. You still have the option of having a webmaster edit the template for you. If you do this be sure to have all the text and graphics ready so they can just cut and past it into your template. Many of the template companies offer a custom design service at a reasonable price.

For less than fifty dollars you can buy a high quality website that can look better than a professionally designed site that will cost you much more. If you learn to modify the site yourself you have much better control. You can make changes when you want. Having to go through a web designer to make changes can be frustrating.

Here is how you can be poised for success when those opportunities arise.

1. Be sure you understand the criteria which is used to evaluate you and the expectations of the decision makers in your organization.

2. Do everything you can to ensure the success of your boss. And, share the credit for your successes with him/her.

3. Establish yourself as the "go to" person when there is a problem or difficult project. Be the one most likely to offer good solutions to tough problems.

4. Be reliable. Be on time. Complete assignments ahead of schedule. Be low maintenance.

5. Do not just accept challenges; seek them out.

6. Be cheerful and positive, especially in times of crisis. Offer your ideas in a constructive way, without overt or implied criticism of others.

7. Learn to accept praise modestly and to share the credit for your successes with others. Even more important; learn to accept and react to criticism without anger or resentment.

8. What skills does your organization need that your colleagues do not have? Developing them will show initiative and greatly increase your value.
